Restoration of Stanwix Almshouses for Thurles Lions Trust Housing Association, Thurles
The scheme includes the retention and reuse of the existing protected Alms Houses constructed in the late 19th Century. We converted the dwellings into 9 apartments and retained the Main Directors House as a Consulting space for use by the wider community.
The design also includes a new Terrace of 5 units and an Assisted Living Care building. All buildings are ranged around a central green open space with direct access to Kickham St. The design carefully retains the character of the existing buildings and embraces a sense of revival for the dis-used buildings, which have been an important feature in this town for over 130 years.
New works and alterations designed by eml, with Tom McNamara & Partners (QS), PHM Consulting (civil and structural engineers), MWP (M&E engineers), and executed by contractor Leetherm. Photos by Donal Murphy.
